Kakumiro District | The Black Examiner – On Tuesday, two people died in a road crash. The vehicle they were traveling in overturned and was engulfed in flames along the Kakumiro-Kibaale Road in Kakumiro District.

The victims have been identified as Collins Mugwerwa, the manager of Eden Resort Hotel, and Sarah Kusiima, the supervisor of Avenue Bar. Both establishments are situated within Kakumiro Town Council. The unfortunate mishap occurred in the early hours of the morning, around 2 a.m., near Mijinga Swamp in Kyakinaka Village, a mere kilometer away from Kakumiro Town.

According to ASP Godwin Mwesigwa, a police officer responsible for traffic matters in Kakumiro District, the Mercedes Benz in which the pair was traveling veered off the road and somersaulted before becoming engulfed in flames. Despite valiant attempts to quell the fire, the victims suffered from severe burns, making rescue efforts futile.

Mwesigwa stated, “The bodies were recovered from the scene and taken to Kakumiro Health Center for a postmortem examination.”

Maj David Matovu, the Resident District Commissioner of Kakumiro, elaborated on the extent of the tragedy. He mentioned that due to the severe burns sustained by the victims, samples from their remains were to be collected and dispatched to a government laboratory for DNA testing. This would be essential in definitively identifying the victims given the nature of their injuries.

Matovu reassured, “The scene of crime officers are here trying to get samples from the remains of the victims and take them to Wandegeya at the government analytical laboratory where the experts will identify the victims clearly using DNA. We need to be patient.”

Eyewitness Isaac Juuko recounted his experience to The Black Examiner, explaining that during the night, he heard a loud noise resulting from the vehicle colliding with a stone on the roadside before it ultimately overturned. Juuko and the village secretary made a valiant effort to douse the flames by using water basins, but the intensity of the fire proved overwhelming.

Juuko shared, “I heard a loud bang at night, and I rushed to come here with our village secretary, and we found the Benz burning seriously. We called in the police.”
