The Uganda Bureau of Statistics (UBOS) has announced the official release date for the main 2024 National Population and Housing Census report. Scheduled for October 3, 2024, the report will be presented at a significant event held at the Kampala Serena Hotel starting at 9:00 AM. According to UBOS, the unveiling will be broadcast live on TV, radio, and various social media platforms to ensure wide access to the information.
The main report will provide detailed answers to three critical questions:
- How Ugandans are living,
- What assets they own, and
- Where they access essential services.
These insights will offer a comprehensive look into the quality of life and the state of resources across the country, making the report a vital tool for policymakers, economists, and development organizations.
The preliminary census results have already given a snapshot of Uganda’s population size, revealing a total of 45.9 million people. This figure highlights the rapid growth of the country’s population and sets the stage for more in-depth analysis of demographic trends, living conditions, and access to services in the upcoming report.
The 2024 National Population and Housing Census was 99% funded by the Government of Uganda, with the total cost amounting to 328.74 billion Ugandan Shillings. This underscores the government’s commitment to collecting accurate and comprehensive data for planning and development purposes. In addition to the government funding, development partners such as UNHCR, UNDP, and UNFPA contributed the remaining 1%, which totaled 18.5 billion Ugandan shillings.
UBOS emphasized that the release of the main report aligns with the broader Census Roadmap. This roadmap was established to ensure timely collection, analysis, and dissemination of the data collected during the May 2024 census. The report’s release will also fulfill a promise made by the Census Commissioner during the launch of the preliminary results on June 27, 2024.
One of the most anticipated aspects of the main report is its focus on three specific areas:
- Living Conditions: This section will delve into how Ugandans are living, examining factors such as housing quality, employment status, household sizes, and other socio-economic indicators.
- Asset Ownership: The report will provide detailed data on what assets Ugandan households own, including property, vehicles, and other valuables. This information will be crucial for understanding wealth distribution and economic disparities across the country.
- Access to Services: Finally, the report will offer insights into where people access essential services such as healthcare, education, water, and sanitation. This data will help identify gaps in service delivery and guide future development projects.
The comprehensive data in the 2024 Census Report is expected to play a pivotal role in guiding national policies, development programs, and resource allocation. By offering insights into living conditions, asset ownership, and access to essential services, the report will inform efforts to improve the quality of life for all Ugandans. Moreover, the data will help local governments and international organizations tailor their interventions to meet the specific needs of different regions and demographics.
The 2024 Census marks a significant milestone for Uganda, providing a rich source of information that will be used for long-term planning and development. The extensive support from both the government and international partners underscores the importance of this census in shaping Uganda’s future. By releasing this data in a transparent and accessible manner, UBOS is ensuring that key stakeholders have the tools they need to make informed decisions that will benefit the entire population.
