The 55th African Airlines Association (AFRAA) general assembly, scheduled for November 19 in Uganda, will prioritize the recruitment of more women into the aviation sector, according to organizers.
Uganda Airlines CEO Jenifer Bamuturaki, speaking in Kampala, highlighted the male dominance in the African aviation industry, citing Uganda’s case with only six women pilots compared to the majority of male counterparts. She announced plans for Uganda Airlines to advocate for increased female representation at the AFRAA general assembly.
Themed “Strides to Transform Aviation for Development,” the summit will take place at Commonwealth Speke Resort in Entebbe, marking Uganda’s inaugural hosting of the AFRAA AGA. Bamuturaki emphasized this opportunity for Uganda to showcase its progress, strengthen global industry relationships, and potentially attract investments and partnerships.
The summit agenda includes discussions on Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF), a crucial topic in the refining and aerospace industries. By 2030, airlines flying into Europe are expected to use SAF-powered engines. Bamuturaki stressed the need for Uganda to prepare for this costly venture.
SAF, a liquid fuel that reduces CO2 emissions by up to 80%, can be produced from various sources, aligning with environmental sustainability goals. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) sees SAF as a key contributor to achieving net-zero emissions in aviation by 2050.
With 409 global delegates confirmed, the summit will host representatives from diverse sectors, including aviation spare part manufacturers, technology firms, and finance companies. Binen Betty, Acting and Business Development Officer at Uganda Wildlife Conservation Education Centre, noted the assembly’s potential to showcase Uganda’s tourism offerings.
Founded in 1968 in Accra, Ghana, AFRAA is a leading trade association of African Union nations’ airlines, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya. It facilitates cooperation among African airlines, representing over 85% of total international traffic carried by these airlines.
