Friday, December 8, 2023

Summary:

  • Tension is rising among opposition politicians in Uganda, particularly within the NUP, as sources suggest that Bobi Wine has finalized the selection of a new Leader of the Opposition to replace Mathias Mpuuga, with differing opinions and cautionary voices within the party.

Tension is mounting among opposition politicians, particularly within the National Unity Platform (NUP) MPs, according to sources. It is reported that Kyagulanyi Ssentamu, commonly known as ‘Bobi Wine,’ has already made a decision regarding Mpuuga’s position and is expected to announce it soon. A source close to Bobi Wine revealed to Bukedde that the selection for the Leader of the Opposition (LoP) has been finalized, and the name will be submitted to parliament upon his return.

This development follows Bobi Wine being presented with six potential replacements for Mpuuga, including Favia Nabagabe Kalule (Kasanda district) and John Baptist Nambeshe (Manjia and Buduuda). The atmosphere among politicians is charged, with differing opinions on the current state of the opposition. Some emphasize the challenges faced by the opposition at present, crediting Mpuuga’s inspirational leadership, while others are keenly awaiting Kyagulanyi’s decision.

A NUP MP stressed the unity among members, expressing the importance of handling issues collectively. Cautioning against creating gaps in the party, the MP urged Bobi Wine to consider the past two years and six months of successful collaboration. The six names initially proposed were led by the incumbent Mathias Mpuuga MP (Nyendo Mukungwe).

MP Abdullah Kiwanuka (Mukono North) voiced satisfaction with Mpuuga’s performance, asserting that there is no need for a replacement unless specific issues are identified and corrected. However, NUP campaign chief Fred Nyanzi, based in Dubai, emphasized the careful consideration needed for selecting the opposition leader, warning against haste and potential repercussions.

Chairman Nyanzi highlighted the positive aspects of democracy, urging party members to trust their leaders and not rush to judgment. He acknowledged the current LoP’s commendable performance but emphasized leaving the decision to Kyagulanyi, expressing hope for a resolution within the week.

Ronald Balimwezo (Nakawa East) acknowledged Mpuuga’s achievements but emphasized the authority of the top NUP leadership in making the final decision. He encouraged MPs to respect the democratic process and wait for the outcome.

Some opposition MPs highlighted Mpuuga’s strong candidacy, while others speculated about the influence of MP John Baptist Nambeshe’s association with the party president. Fred Nyanzi stressed the need to trust Kyagulanyi and his trusted advisors, as all decision-making powers lie with him.
