Wednesday, August 16, 2023

Lieutenant Kayanja Muhanga, the Commander of Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) Land Forces, has expressed praise for Congolese citizens who aided Ugandan forces in countering the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels.

Lt. Gen. Muhanga addressed the Congolese population in various areas, including North Kivu, Beni territory, and the villages of Karuruma and Kalibuli.

In November 2021, Uganda launched ‘Operation Shujaa’ in the jungles of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) to combat the ADF and restore peace and security to the region.

During a public meeting in Kalibuli village, Congolese nationals conveyed their gratitude for the collaborative efforts, requesting Lt. Gen. Kayanja Muhanga to convey their thanks to both President and Commander-in-Chief H.E Gen Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and the Democratic Republic of Congo’s President H.E Félix Antoine Tshisekedi for their joint efforts in defeating the ADF terrorists.

Various speakers shared the positive impacts of Operation Shujaa in their region. Muse Kakule, Chief of Works in Beni territory, noted the correlation between peace and development, emphasizing the improvements in infrastructure and transportation routes.

Matara Tembeya, representing the Beni territory Chief in Karuruma, urged fellow Congolese to continue supporting Operation Shujaa for lasting peace. Lt. Gen. Muhanga thanked the local population for their support, highlighting their role in ADF’s defeat and expressing the ongoing focus on Mwalika valley.

Mwalika valley, once an ADF stronghold, served as a training ground for recruits and senior commanders. Efforts have been concentrated on clearing this area of terrorists.

Lt. Gen. Muhanga, along with Maj Gen Dick Olum and FARDC senior operational commanders, visited troops and tactical commanders to assess the progress of Operation Shujaa.
