Vandalized Road Signposts Create Deadly Hazard in Kikuube

Thursday, August 24, 2023

Greed for quick profits drives vandalism of road signposts in Kikuube District, resulting in deadly accidents and injuries. Hoima-Buhuka, Hoima-Fort Portal, and Kabaale-Kiziramfumbi Roads are among the affected areas, according to Vincent Alpha Opio, the vice chairman of the district’s local government.

Recent road crashes, like those involving Kamili Binkwasa and Jimmy Wamara, residents of Kikoonda village and Kibbararu village, underscore the dangers caused by vandalized signposts. Opio attributes these accidents to the absence of clear road information due to the destruction of signposts, even though authorities like road constructors, the district, and the Uganda National Roads Authority (UNRA) attempt to provide alerts.

Opio laments that apart from the loss of life, the district faces financial losses due to the need to replace these vandalized signposts, costing anywhere from Shs200,000 to Shs1m each. The district has lost around Sh10m due to such vandalism, funds that could have been used for other important projects.

Approximately 30 road signs have been vandalized in the district, with youth cutting and selling them to scrap dealers at significantly reduced prices. Opio warns against engaging in criminal activities that harm community infrastructure and urges the youth to avoid such actions to avoid legal consequences.
