Renowned artist Winnie Nwangi has ignited a social media firestorm with her assertive stance on the expectation of payment for women when taken out on dates.
Nwangi firmly expressed that she considers 50,000 Uganda shillings to be an inadequate amount when agreeing to go on a date, emphasizing, “You want me to come on a date, you have to pay me. I’m not your mother.”
These statements were made during a television show, where Nwangi elaborated on the idea that accepting a date invitation implies a commitment of her time and exposes her to potential inconveniences. She argued, “Our money has lost value. What can UGX 50K do? I’ve put effort into dressing well, doing makeup, and showing up for the date, and you give me only 50K afterward? I’d rather stay home and watch TV. Men, step up!”
Nwangi’s remarks have not only caught the attention of netizens but also sparked a flood of responses from men. In response to the artist’s demand, user Solomon Kaweesa posted, “Are we your fathers?”
Kalounji added, “This is not appropriate behavior; they want to normalize the idea that being single and engaging in casual relationships and dates is normal. Instead of being proud to see young girls winning and having stable marriages, it’s disheartening to witness the decline of values.”
Simon Sseruyange retaliated with a different perspective, stating, “It’s essentially disguised prostitution. You should clearly state your prices, and interested parties will readily pay. Don’t waste their time pretending to ‘get to know them’ when you’re not genuinely interested.”
Notably, it is intriguing that 99 percent of those expressing their opinions are men, while women appear unusually unresponsive to the matter.
