PARIS, FRANCE (Examiner) – Uganda is aiming high in its pursuit of clean cooking solutions. Ruth Nankabirwa, the Minister of Energy and Mineral Development, revealed the government’s ambitious plan at the Clean Cooking Summit in Paris, France.

During the summit, Nankabirwa emphasized Uganda’s commitment to promoting the adoption of Electric Cooking through the National E-Cooking Strategy. Currently standing at just 1%, the target is to escalate this figure to 20% by the year 2030.

In a significant show of support, the British High Commission in Uganda pledged £5 million towards modern energy cooking services, facilitated through the Ministry of Energy. Nankabirwa expressed gratitude for this partnership with the UK Government, which includes establishing a dedicated Clean Cooking Unit to drive Uganda’s clean cooking agenda forward.

Nankabirwa highlighted the importance of policy frameworks and regulations in advancing clean cooking initiatives, stressing the need for tailored approaches to suit local contexts. She underscored the broader significance of clean cooking, framing it as a crucial component of a just energy transition with far-reaching benefits for people, the planet, and the environment.

This transition holds promise for Africa, offering opportunities for socio-economic development, improved energy access, job creation, and enhanced energy security. By embracing renewables and aligning with climate-friendly strategies such as those outlined in the Paris Agreement, African nations can leapfrog fossil fuel technologies towards a more sustainable future.
