Evelyn Lagu, also known as Evelyn Love, was a Ugandan musician and actress, born Evelyn Nakabira on June 1, 1982, in Kalungu district, which was formerly part of Masaka. She rose to prominence in the Ugandan entertainment scene through her remarkable contributions to music and film.

Early Life and Education

Evelyn Lagu’s early life was marked by adversity following the loss of her parents. She was raised by her aunt in Mityana district, Uganda. She pursued her education at Aga Khan, Mityana SS, and Pride SS Mityana for her O’ Level studies, and later completed her A’ Levels at St. Peter’s Busubizi in 1999.


Music Career

Lagu’s journey in the music industry commenced as a backing vocalist for renowned artists such as Carol Nakimera, Halima Namakula, Ragga Dee, and Mampi from Zambia. She was also associated with bands like Mustard and Flash. As a solo artist, she gained recognition for hit songs like “Ogumanga,” “Ngukuwadde,” “Silkyatya,” and “Kasita Bakuleka.”

Acting Career

Evelyn Lagu expanded her artistic horizons by venturing into movie acting. She became a member of the Zubairi Family, a prominent company in the Ugandan film industry.

Health Struggles

Throughout her life, Evelyn Lagu battled heart and kidney complications. In June 2021, she sought a kidney transplant in Turkey, but due to her deteriorating health, the procedure was not possible. Medical professionals advised her to return to Uganda for ongoing treatment, with the hope of revisiting the transplant option once her health improved. Unfortunately, her condition did not improve.


Evelyn Lagu’s contribution to Ugandan music and film left an indelible mark on the industry. Her powerful voice and artistic talent endeared her to fans both in Uganda and beyond.

Charity Work

At the time of her passing, Evelyn Lagu was dedicated to philanthropic efforts. She was actively preparing for a charity concert titled “Evelyn Love Live in Charity,” scheduled to take place on October 28, 2023, at Papaz Spot in Makindye, a suburb of the city.

Evelyn Lagu passed away on Monday, September 18, 2023, at the age of 41, at her residence in Nabugabo.

Her memory lives on through her music, films, and the impact she made in the Ugandan entertainment industry.
