  • President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni addressed army officers at the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, urging them to combat divisive identity politics that undermine national unity and institutional effectiveness

President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni delivered a pivotal address to army officers at the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, stressing the critical need to shield Uganda from the divisive politics of identity. Speaking at State House Entebbe on June 25, 2024, General Museveni underscored how identity-based politics has not only fractured national unity but has also been detrimental to the stability of numerous African nations.

Museveni pointed to Sudan as a stark example, where internal divisions based on ethnicity and religion led to the country’s fragmentation. He highlighted how these divisions disrupted economic activities, noting a shift in trade dynamics from Khartoum to Juba, now reliant on goods from East African countries due to Sudan’s internal strife.

Reflecting on Uganda’s history, Museveni denounced past leaders who exploited ethnic and racial differences, such as Idi Amin’s expulsion of Asians, which severely impacted the economy. He emphasized Uganda’s rejection of such divisive politics and championed Pan-Africanism as a unifying force essential for regional prosperity.

Addressing security concerns, Museveni lamented how ethnic divisions had compromised national institutions like the army in many African countries, citing Uganda’s own challenges during the Idi Amin era. He stressed the need for unity and effective governance to strengthen these institutions.

At the Senior Command and Staff College Kimaka, Maj Gen. George Igumba highlighted the college’s role in training military officers from Uganda and neighboring countries. He outlined plans for infrastructure development aimed at expanding enrollment and enhancing training capacity to meet regional military education needs.
