Charity Fundraiser Delivers AFC Bournemouth Kits to Uganda

An AFC Bournemouth supporter is preparing to travel to Uganda next week to deliver football kits and equipment to an orphanage and football academy.

Alex Hancock-Tomlin is extending his support to Uganda Cherries, a community-based orphanage and football academy located in the eastern city of Bugembe.

The teams at the orphanage consist of boys and girls aged 8-19, all of whom are avid AFC Bournemouth fans.

Three years ago, a fundraiser initiated by Steve Butler allowed AFC Bournemouth fans to contribute funds and old football kits to Uganda Cherries. Donations from Cherries fans have continued steadily.

Steve commented, “It’s all heading in the right direction at the moment.”

Upon discovering @Uganadacherries, Alex decided to get involved and provide assistance.

As the first team member from the charity to visit the football team in Uganda, Alex’s visit comes as his girlfriend secures a job in Uganda, and they both plan to relocate there from the following week.

He will visit the orphanage to meet the players and deliver the donations, emphasizing that further contributions are welcome.

“This is a gateway to making things easier, and I want to take as much as possible when I go out next week,” he added.

Living in the Ugandan capital, Kampala, which is two hours away from the orphanage, Alex plans to engage with the school, take photographs, and ascertain their needs while on-site. He views this as a tremendous opportunity.

Steve, the driving force behind the fundraiser, has played a vital role in its success, and Alex expressed his gratitude, saying, “We have him to thank.”

Kizza, who manages the orphanage, has inquired about the availability of an old phone that Alex can bring with him, allowing students to share images of themselves in their new kit and provide social media updates.

The AFC Bournemouth community and fans have collectively contributed £20,000.

Alex shared his excitement for what lies ahead, looking forward to making a positive impact in Uganda.
