KAMPALA, (Examiner) – The 2024 Opportunity Bank Annual Chairman’s Run took place today at the bank’s headquarters on Old Kira Road in Kamwokya, drawing more than 300 participants. Themed “Planting Hope, Growing Change, Greening the Future,” this year’s event marks a significant effort to support social causes. Since 2018, the run has funded initiatives such as aiding households affected by nodding syndrome in Northern Uganda, supporting the Rotary Blood Bank at Mengo Hospital, and installing a solar water pump in Nakivale Refugee Settlement.

This year’s run also launches Opportunity Bank’s ambitious three-year tree-planting campaign in schools and communities. The initiative aims to educate youth about environmental conservation, climate change mitigation, and biodiversity. CEO Owen Amanya, who completed the challenging 10km course, emphasized the event’s health benefits and the importance of physical activity for those with sedentary lifestyles.

Board Director Paul Soko highlighted the relevance of the theme, stressing its impact on vulnerable groups like women, youth, and people with disabilities who depend on the environment for their livelihoods. Winners Byarugaba Myles (10km race) and Mukiibi Alex (5km race) expressed their delight at their achievements.

The tree-planting initiative aims to plant over 50,000 indigenous and exotic fruit trees in schools, fostering nature conservation and environmental education among youth, thereby promoting biodiversity conservation for generations to come.
