Summary:

  • Tim Southee’s three wickets for four runs helped New Zealand bowl out Uganda for 40 in 18.2 overs and win their first Group C match with nine wickets to spare. Despite the victory, New Zealand won’t advance to the Super Eight stage due to earlier losses.

Tim Southee claimed three wickets for just four runs, leading New Zealand to their first win in Group C by bowling out Uganda for a mere 40 runs in 18.2 overs. New Zealand chased down the target with ease, losing only one wicket.

Southee, alongside his long-time bowling partner Trent Boult, who took two wickets for seven runs, and Rachin Ravindra, who chipped in with 2-9, helped restrict Uganda to the third lowest total in T20 World Cup history.

Earlier in the tournament, Uganda was bowled out for 39 by the West Indies, matching the Netherlands’ score against Sri Lanka in 2014.

Despite this victory, New Zealand’s hopes of advancing to the Super Eight stage were dashed after losses to Afghanistan and the West Indies, who secured the qualifying spots from Group C.

“It was obviously a pretty clinical performance and nice to get a win,” Southee remarked. “We’re extremely disappointed to have played ourselves out of the tournament.”
