Uganda’s boys’ and girls’ teams both clinched the FIBA U-18 Zone V Basketball Championship 2024 titles.

The girls’ team secured an 82-52 victory over Rwanda, led by captain Christine Namyalo, who guided her team to a commanding 41-24 halftime lead. Resty Nanangwe scored 21 points, and Shiphrah Kiranda added 18 points for the Junior Gazelles. Rwanda’s Brigitte Nibishaka and Rebecca Cyuzuzo contributed 13 and 12 points, respectively.

In the boys’ final, Uganda narrowly defeated Rwanda 69-66, overcoming a 34-29 halftime deficit. Tejan Joel Rugette, named Most Valuable Player (MVP), and Peter Serunjogi each scored 15 points for the Junior Silverbacks. Rwanda’s Dylan Lenson Kayijuka led all scorers with 26 points.

Uganda’s head coach Andrew Tendo Senyondwa credited teamwork for the hard-fought victories, particularly in the closing moments of the intense finals. Both Ugandan teams have now secured spots in the upcoming FIBA U-18 African Championship, slated for August 2024 in South Africa.
