A groundbreaking peer-reviewed study published today in Health Care for Women International reveals the transformative power of the Transcendental Meditation (TM) technique among young women living in Kampala’s urban slums. Conducted by lead author Dr. Leslee Goldstein and her team from Maharishi International University, the study highlights significant improvements in mental and physical well-being among participants.

Under conditions of poverty and hardship—including economic instability, gender disparities, and violence—TM emerged as a potent tool for enhancing self-esteem, self-efficacy, and gratitude while reducing fatigue, worry, and alcohol use. According to Dr. Goldstein, these outcomes underscore the profound impact of TM in empowering young women to navigate their challenges more effectively.

The study introduces a pioneering “Theory of Empowerment from Within,” emphasizing the role of inner consciousness in building self-esteem—a crucial factor in empowerment. By facilitating a state of transcending during meditation, TM helps participants experience profound inner calm and resilience, essential for personal growth and empowerment.

Collaboratively conducted with the African Women and Girls Organization for Total Knowledge (AWAGO) and the Empowered Women community organization, the research involved 130 female youth aged 13 to 26. Judith Nassali of AWAGO and Goreti Katana of Empowered Women emphasize that true empowerment originates internally, echoing the study’s findings.

Dr. Andra Smith from the University of Ottawa highlights TM’s role in promoting psychological health and self-esteem during critical developmental stages. The longitudinal study, spanning eight months with pre- and post-tests, demonstrated statistically significant improvements in self-esteem, self-efficacy, and overall well-being, corroborated by participants’ feedback and community observations.

Participants shared poignant testimonials of personal transformation, citing improved health, stronger family relationships, and enhanced educational and career prospects. This research, supported by The Rona and Jeffery Abramson Foundation, illuminates TM as a pivotal tool for mitigating stress and fostering empowerment among marginalized populations.
