Somalia | The Black Examiner – An Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack occurred yesterday, targeting a civilian taxi that was travelling ahead of the African Transition Mission in Somalia (ATMIS). This devastating attack resulted in the immediate death of seven passengers, while six others are now fighting for their lives in critical condition.

ATMIS troops  are stationed at various Forward Operating Bases (FOB’s) and often go on patrols, in which they suffer attacks at the hands of Al-Shabaab.

Deputy UPDF Spokesperson, Cold Deo Akiiki, provided information about the incident. The targeted taxi was leading the ATMIS mini convoy, en route from Shalambot to Beledamin. Akiiki revealed that the attack involved the detonation of twin Roadside Improvised Explosive Devices (RSIED) that exploded simultaneously upon impact. Tragically, seven occupants of the taxi lost their lives instantaneously, and an additional six individuals sustained severe injuries.

Uganda, a country contributing significantly to peacekeeping efforts, has deployed more than 6000 soldiers to Somalia. Their mission is to bolster stability in the region. This recent attack underscores the ongoing challenges faced by peacekeeping forces. Just a few months prior, in May of this year, the extremist group Al-Shabaab launched a deadly assault on a UPDF base, resulting in the tragic loss of 54 soldiers.

Col Akiiki provided insight into the response to yesterday’s horrific incident. He stated that the casualties were swiftly transported to Shalambot hospital by the Somali National Army, highlighting the collaborative efforts being made to address such unfortunate events
