Senior officials within the US national security apparatus have disclosed their concerns regarding Chinese cyber intrusions into Japan’s defense networks. According to both current and former US officials, these apprehensions have led to a series of diplomatic interactions aimed at addressing the security breach.

Over the course of approximately a year, the United States reportedly conveyed warnings to Japan concerning the infiltration of its defense networks by state-sponsored Chinese hackers. The breach, detected a few years ago, has raised significant alarm among senior US national security officials. Their growing unease emanates from the potential jeopardy posed to sensitive information shared between the United States and its allies.

Multiple US delegations, commencing in the year 2020, embarked on visits to Tokyo to emphasize the gravity of the situation and to encourage Japan to bolster its cybersecurity measures. Despite these diplomatic overtures, initial indications suggested that Japan’s response to the cyberattack may not have been sufficiently robust.

Speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitive nature of the matter, the officials explained that their primary objective was to facilitate collaborative efforts in enhancing security measures. The revelation of China’s alleged involvement in hacking Japan’s defense networks has sparked diplomatic engagement, ultimately aimed at fortifying the digital defenses of both nations.
