Radio Anchor Shot Dead During Live Broadcast

The victim Juan Jumalon

Philippines | AGENCIES | A tragic incident unfolded in the Philippines as a radio anchor, Juan Jumalon, widely known as DJ Johnny Walker, was fatally shot while conducting a live broadcast from his home-based studio, as confirmed by local authorities.

President Marcos Jr. strongly denounced the murder of this radio journalist, marking the fourth such incident since his assumption of office in June 2022, according to the National Union of Journalists in the Philippines. The union expressed its deep concern over the heinous nature of the attack, which took place within Jumalon’s own home, doubling as the radio station.

The incident occurred as Mr. Jumalon was live-streaming on Facebook at approximately 05:30 local time. The perpetrator reportedly entered the recording booth and, after seeking permission to make an “important on-air announcement,” shot him. Law enforcement officials have already secured CCTV footage in the vicinity to aid in their investigation.

Mr. Jumalon’s broadcasts were typically featured on the 94.7 Gold Mega Calamba FM Facebook page, with an audience of around 2,400 followers. His wife promptly rushed him to the hospital after the attack, but tragically, medical professionals declared him deceased upon arrival. Police reported that they had no prior knowledge of threats against his life.

In response to the shocking incident, President Marcos Jr. took to social media (X) to announce his instructions for a comprehensive investigation aimed at swiftly bringing the culprits to justice.

The Philippines remains a perilous place for journalists, as noted by the US-based Freedom House, with a high risk to their safety and well-being.
