Beijing, China | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Uganda has entered into an agreement with the People’s Republic of China to enhance development, cooperation, and digital transformation. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister for Information, Communication Technology, and National Guidance, explained in an interview with the Daily Monitor that the government has been collaborating with China to establish the necessary infrastucture for universal internet access.

“China is technologically ahead of us and has played a crucial role in connecting internet cables to various parts of the country. Through this partnership, we will develop new infrastructure, provide equipment, training, and services to all Ugandans,” Mr. Baryomunsi stated.

He further emphasized, “We are linking urban and rural areas with the help of Chinese companies to ensure that no one is left without internet access. We are erecting towers to achieve full internet coverage.”

The agreement was signed on October 19 in Beijing, the capital of China, during the China-Africa Digital Capacity-Building Cooperation Forum. According to the Uganda Communication Commission’s 2022 Market Performance report, the total number of internet-enabled devices connected to networks reached 10.9 million as of June 2022.

This indicates that approximately 20 percent of Uganda’s population is currently connected to the internet.
