Summary:

  • Winch Energy secures funding for solar mini grids in Uganda and Sierra Leone, aiming to provide clean energy access to over 60,000 people in remote communities, supported by major international partnerships and innovative technology.

Winch Energy, a leading provider of off-grid utilities, has secured funding to launch solar mini grid projects across 49 villages in Uganda and Sierra Leone. This milestone was achieved through the establishment of Winch Energy IPP Holdings Limited (“WIPP”), marking the largest mini grid financing portfolio to date.

Partnering with Total Eren, Itochu Corporation, Al Gihaz Holdings, and Winch Partners, Winch Energy’s initiative aims to provide clean energy access to over 60,000 people in remote communities. The $16 million project, supported by NEoT Offgrid Africa and SunFunder, will deploy Winch Energy’s proprietary Remote Power Unit (RPU) technology. This technology will enable the mini grids to be operational within the next 12 months, delivering affordable and sustainable energy solutions.

Funded in part by the Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) and the German Development Ministry (BMZ) among others, these projects also include provisions for internet access and portable batteries to extend electricity beyond the mini grid’s reach. The initiative is bolstered by partnerships with telecom operators and support from organizations like GIZ and UNOPS.

Nicholas Wrigley, CEO of Winch Energy Limited, expressed excitement over the funding’s success, emphasizing its potential to scale operations across Africa. Frédéric Pfister, Director of NEoT Offgrid Africa, highlighted the significance of the financing scheme in advancing energy access across the continent.

With plans to expand into more countries and projects, Winch Energy and NEoT anticipate further growth, aiming to exceed $100 million in operational projects within the next 24 months. This initiative not only positions Winch Energy as a leader in off-grid renewables but also promises to stimulate economic development and improve essential services in underserved communities.
