Summary:
- A fatal collision occurred at the Namboole interchange in Kampala, as a trailer failed to brake, causing two confirmed deaths and three injuries, with a history of accidents at the notorious black spot.
At least two fatalities and three injuries have been confirmed following a trailer’s failure to brake, resulting in a collision with 10 vehicles at the Namboole interchange in Kampala. Luke Owoyesigyire, the deputy spokesman for Kampala Metropolitan Police, revealed that the wreckage is currently being searched for potential trapped individuals.
“As of now, two fatalities have been confirmed, and three individuals are injured, with the injured already transported to Mulago Hospital for treatment. The situation remains active, and the final death toll is uncertain,” stated Assistant Superintendent of Police Owoyesigyire to Monitor.
The trailer, en route to Kampala, collided with other vehicles stuck in a traffic jam. The identities of the victims remain unknown at this time, with the incident occurring at a notorious location where heavy trucks frequently collide with other vehicles.
As of 8 pm on Thursday, police teams are on-site to rescue those trapped in the wreckage. Notably, the scene has a history of severe accidents, with a previous tragic incident in the late 1990s involving a minibus that failed to brake, ending up in a trench, burying workers in muddy water. During the rescue operation, another trailer, unable to brake, collided with both rescuers and the existing wreckage, resulting in over 20 casualties.
