Following mounting pressure from celebrities like Azawi and Bebe Cool, Airtel Uganda has introduced a new feature aimed at addressing customer concerns over data usage. The Data Usage Manager, accessible through the MyAirtel App, empowers users to monitor their data consumption, including usage by specific applications.

The launch, which took place at Airtel’s headquarters in Kampala, saw Michael Bamwesigye from the Uganda Communications Commission and Manoj Urali, Airtel Uganda’s Managing Director, unveiling the tool. Mr. Manoj emphasized Airtel’s commitment to enhancing customer experience and supporting Uganda’s digital advancement.

Airtel’s initiative comes in response to recurrent complaints about data depletion, dubbed as “vanishing data,” particularly from high-profile figures like Azawi and Bebe Cool. Azawi voiced dissatisfaction over data disappearance despite minimal usage, while Bebe Cool threatened legal action after experiencing a rapid data drain while using the TikTok app.

Michael Bamwesigye commended Airtel Uganda for its proactive stance in addressing consumer grievances regarding data usage during the launch. He highlighted the significance of such measures in improving customer experience and acknowledged Airtel’s responsiveness to customer feedback.

The move coincides with the rapid expansion of internet access in Uganda, largely driven by smartphone proliferation, as indicated in the UCC Market Report for June 2023 FY 4Q 2022/23, which reported a significant increase in mobile internet subscriptions.
