Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Uganda is seeking to dispel its reputation as a hotbed of illicit gold trading. But a recent report, which revealed major discrepancies between gold imports and exports and singled out several companies, shows that the country has a long way to go.
Gold unaccounted for The more than two tonnes unaccounted for may have been sold locally or kept in refinery stocks, according to the report. Three companies – African Gold Refinery, Aurnish Trading and Metal Testing and Smelting Co – had shortfalls totalling 270bn Ugandan shillings ($71.5m), according to the report.
