PAU Addresses Labor Grievances in Uganda’s Oil Sector

Saturday, September 16, 2023

The Petroleum Authority of Uganda (PAU) is actively addressing labor-related concerns within the oil sector. Responding to reports of labor rights violations, PAU acknowledged that certain contractors initially had disputes with employees but later reached resolutions, resulting in a return to normal work operations.

The grievances primarily centered around inadequate awareness regarding statutory deductions like social security and taxes, as well as issues related to the overtime payment policy. PAU promptly initiated discussions with all involved parties, including district leadership, to identify the root causes and establish amicable solutions.

PAU encourages contractors to establish regular communication channels and platforms with their staff to both resolve existing grievances and prevent future issues.

PAU commits to continuing its close collaboration with various stakeholders in the oil sector to enhance awareness and compliance with labor-related laws and policies at different project sites, thereby ensuring a conducive working environment.

Significant oil field development activities are ongoing in the Kingfisher Development area in Hoima and Kikuube districts, as well as the Tilenga Project in Buliisa and Nwoya districts. Additionally, a substantial oil industry project involves the construction of Kabalega International Airport on the oil refinery land in Hoima district.
