Summary:

  • A student at Soroti Pharmaceutical College was fatally shot by unidentified gunmen while intervening in a robbery attempt targeting his friend. The assailants fled the scene, leaving the victim dead. Police are investigating the incident.

A tragic incident unfolded at Soroti Pharmaceutical College when unidentified gunmen on a motorcycle fatally shot a second-year student, Patrick Olinga, aged 23. According to ASP Edison Obukulem, the acting East Kyoga regional Police spokesperson, Olinga was shot in the chest and died on the spot. The events transpired on Friday night, prompting a murder investigation by Soroti East Division police.

Reports suggest Olinga was en route to Cloud-9 Club for Campus night when he encountered his friend, Benard Edonu. As they conversed, two individuals approached them near Enuyu road, demanding Edonu’s laptop bag at gunpoint. While Edonu attempted to comply, Olinga intervened, leading to a struggle. Despite Edonu’s attempt to flee, Olinga was overpowered and tragically shot dead by the assailants, who then fled the scene on their motorcycle.

ASP Obukulem highlighted the darkness of the location as a contributing factor, allowing the assailants to execute their robbery and shooting undetected. The motive appears to have been robbery, targeting Edonu, who operates a mobile money shop in the area.

Following the incident, Olinga’s body was discovered at the scene, and investigations are ongoing. The body has been transferred to Soroti hospital mortuary for further examination.
