Police authorities at Bugolobi and Jinja Road are currently conducting investigations into a shooting incident that tragically resulted in the loss of a woman’s life.

On the evening of Friday, July 28, at approximately 9 pm, a distressing altercation occurred between a private security guard identified as Aijuka Rode, employed by Security Plus Ltd, and a female shopkeeper at a drinks and merchandise shop within the Bugolobi Market building. During the altercation, Aijuka Rode allegedly opened fire, critically injuring the shopkeeper, identified as 48-year-old Mutesi Zainabu. The incident took place when Aijuka Rode approached the shop and fired a single shot.

Despite immediate medical attention provided by nearby hospital staff, Zainabu’s injuries proved fatal, and she succumbed to the gunshot wound.

Upon arriving at the scene, the police discovered that the alleged perpetrator, Aijuka Rode, had already fled with his firearm. A manhunt operation was promptly initiated to apprehend him.

As of this morning, Aijuka Rode has been arrested and is currently detained at Jinja Road Police station. The firearm used in the incident has also been recovered and is expected to aid in the ongoing investigation.

Kampala Metropolitan Police’s Deputy Spokesperson, Luke Owoyesigyire, stated that their dedicated team is diligently pursuing the case and assures the public that all efforts are being made to uncover the truth behind this unfortunate incident. Further updates will be provided as the investigation progresses.

Following the surge in gun violence since May, there has been growing concern among the public in Uganda. This incident is one of several cases that prompted President Yoweri Museveni to address the nation in June 2023, reassuring Ugandans and investors that the country remains secure and peaceful. Despite the president’s statement, the police continue to register instances of gun violence.

Zainabu’s body has been transferred to City Mortuary Mulago for a postmortem examination.
