Summary:

  • The Indian Association of Uganda is facilitating free heart surgeries in India for around 150 Ugandan children this year. This initiative, supported by partnerships and discounted airline tickets, addresses the lack of local capacity for treating congenital heart disease.

The Indian Association of Uganda has announced that approximately 150 children from Uganda will receive free heart surgery in India this year. Mr. Sasi Kumar, the Secretary of the Association, made this declaration on Monday at their headquarters in Kampala. He mentioned that the third group of beneficiaries, consisting of five children, is being sent to India’s Namar Hearth Hospital for heart operations.

Mr. Kumar stated, “One child, who is in critical condition, will travel with oxygen support accompanied by a caregiver and a doctor to monitor their health.”

The Association disclosed that they will cover the medical expenses in collaboration with the Rotary Club of Ssese Island. Additionally, Uganda Airlines has provided tickets at a discounted rate.

Mr. Kumar highlighted the increase in beneficiaries, stating, “Previously, we sent three children, but this time, partnering with Rotary Club Ssese, we are sending five.”

He noted that this marks the third batch within three months, totaling 11 children, each requiring between $5,000 (Shs19.4m) and $8,000 (Shs31m) for medical expenses, including those of their caregivers.

Ms. Ritah Namyalo, CEO of the Healthy Heart Foundation, emphasized the prevalence of congenital heart disease among children in Uganda, necessitating treatment abroad due to local capacity constraints.

Mr. Posiano Mbaziira, a resident of Kayunga District, expressed gratitude for the assistance his daughter received after being diagnosed with a heart condition, praising the Indian Association for their support.

The Association revealed that they have facilitated successful surgeries for 165 children in India during their 101 years of existence in Uganda.

A 2020 study conducted by Judith Namuyonga and colleagues from the Uganda Heart Institute highlighted the common occurrence of congenital heart disease in children and the challenges in timely diagnosis due to gaps in the healthcare system.
