Kasese District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Kasese Municipal Member of Parliament, Hon. Ferigo Kambale, has formally requested clearance and security from the Inspector General of Police for an upcoming peaceful demonstration against the government’s plan to withdraw government-paid medical staff from Kilembe Mines Hospital in Kasese district. The demonstration is scheduled for December 1st, 2023, with participants walking from Kilembe Mines Hospital to Kasese main roundabout and then gathering at Mayor’s gardens in Kasese Municipality.
In a letter dated November 22nd, 2023, and received by the IGP office on November 23rd, Hon. Ferigo seeks security provision to ensure the safety of the demonstrators during the event.
However, former Kasese Municipal Member of Parliament, Hon. Robert Centenary, views Hon. Ferigo’s intention to lead a legal battle against the government and organize a peaceful demonstration as wishful thinking. He advises Ferigo to be transparent, guide the local population appropriately, and avoid stirring political emotions that may alter the situation unfavorably.
While supporting the idea of a peaceful demonstration by the local community, Hon. Centenary, also an NRM flag bearer and a member of the ruling government, suggests that Hon. Ferigo could leverage the demonstrators’ petition to justify the potential dangers of withdrawing government medical personnel from Kilembe Mines Hospital to relevant authorities like the Speaker of Parliament, the health committee, and the ministry of health.
Reports indicate that the local community members are actively preparing for the legal battle, with over 1,500 people in agreement, photocopying their national IDs.
