Mulago Hospital Unveils Interventional Radiology Advancements

Kampala, Uganda | The Black Examiner – Mulago National Referral Hospital is set to start treating patients with interventional radiology by using the normal imaging available like ultra sound, CT scan to guide the procedures.

Interventional radiology is a subspecialty of radiology that Mulago has been doing but at a small scale.
Dr. Eva Nabawanuka a radiologist from Mulago hospital while speaking to journalists on Tuesday said that Mulago has now improved they way they manage the patients.

Dr. Nabawanuka said that using this new kind of treatment they are able to see something inside the patient and go ahead and address it.

“Previously we would have just done the Ultrasound or the CT scan and we see what the problem is and then we would have sent them to theatre for the surgeons to cut and address the problem”. Dr Nabawanuka stated.

Now, with interventional radiology Dr. Nabawanuka says that they are able to still use the imaging to do the procedures of addressing the problem within a short period of time using a needle through a very small prick when a patient is not sedated and with good pain control.

This kind of treatment started this week on Monday and since then they have recieved dozens of patients who needed this kind of treatment.
The doctor also said that this kind of treatment will save several Ugandans who were traveling abroad to seek advanced health services.

Dr. Nabawanuka also said Mulago hospital has multiple partners including doctors from the United States of America to help train other three doctors in interventional radiology.

Frank Kasaija 45 from Fortportal got an injury from one of his cows he was rearing and developed pass in the liver.

He tried to seek treatment at Fortportal regional referral hospital untill when the hospital refered him to Mulago for better medical attention.

Kasaija revealed that he got to know about this kind of treatment from her sisters who brought him to Mulago.
After the exercise he said that he is now feeling more better with little pain than before.

Rosemary Byanyima a senior consultant radiologist and the acting Executive Director of Mulago National Referral Hospital said that this method of treatment will be available to other regional referral hospitals so that patients can access this kind of treatment so that they can reduce the number of days they stay in hospitals getting treatment.

Byanyima highlighted that because the consumables used in this kid of treatment are expensive, patients who are to receive interventional radiology are to pay a small fee which is yet to discussed by the hospital management to get that kind of treatment.
