Summary:

  • Ugandan President Museveni’s wife, Maama Janet, tests positive for COVID-19 on Christmas, while the President, who remains negative, speculates whether his previous infection in May contributed to his immunity.

Ugandan President Yoweri K Museveni’s wife, Maama Janet, has tested positive for COVID-19. The revelation came to light after the President shared a post on X, formerly Twitter detailing the situation.

Following a family lunch, Maama Janet began experiencing symptoms, including weakness, headaches, and a “kukarakaatwa” or sandy feeling in the throat. Although an initial Rapid Corona test yielded negative results, a subsequent PCR test sent to Mbarara confirmed her positive status.

President Museveni, concerned for both their well-being, promptly underwent a COVID-19 test on the morning of December 26. Much to his relief, the results came back negative by the afternoon.

The President took to X to share the news and express his gratitude for Maama’s well-being. He revealed their decision for Maama to self-isolate in one of their homes at Rwakyitura while he continued with scheduled programs that did not involve her.

Despite close contact, including sharing a room and an air-conditioned car journey from Entebbe to Nakasero, President Museveni remained negative. He speculated whether his previous bout with COVID-19 in May contributed to his apparent immunity, referring to himself as an “emponoka” or survivor.

The President, on X, stated, “What is of interest is how I remained negative in spite of being with Maama all these days- sharing the room, the air-conditioned car to Entebbe and back to Nakasero. Was it because I am emponoka (survivor) of Corona of last May? Maama is now a first-time corona warrior. She is doing well.”
