The incident transpired around 1 am on Wednesday when a Fuso truck bearing registration number UBN 533T lost control and overturned. The truck, laden with oranges, was en route from Jinja City to Kampala when the unfortunate event unfolded at Bulyantete Village.
Helen Butoto, the spokesperson for Ssezibwa Region Police, confirmed the incident and provided a concise statement. The lifeless bodies of the victims and the injured individuals were promptly recovered from the accident site and transported to Kawolo Hospital for further medical attention and postmortem examinations.
Ms. Butoto conveyed, “Bodies of 9 people have been retrieved from the accident scene and taken to Kawolo Hospital mortuary, while 3 injured persons are receiving treatment at Kawolo Hospital.”
She disclosed that the majority of the casualties were passengers who had purportedly concealed themselves within the truck using a tapeline in an attempt to evade detection by traffic police.
According to a police statement, “The victims suffocated after getting trapped by the angle bars when the truck overturned. The victims had tried to conceal their identity by hiding inside the tapeline that covered the truck.”
As of Wednesday afternoon, seven of the deceased individuals remained unidentified, with only two having been positively identified. The authorities continue their efforts to manage the aftermath of this tragic incident.
