NAIROBI, (Examiner) – In a significant move aimed at bolstering Kenya’s defense capabilities against threats like the Al Shabaab militant group, the European Union (EU) has allocated €20 million ($21.4 million) from its Peace Facility to support the Kenya Defence Forces (KDF). This marks the first direct support to Kenya under the EU Peace Facility, established in 2021 to enhance security initiatives in allied African nations.

According to the European Council, this funding will enable the KDF to safeguard borders, counter internal and external threats, and specifically target increased operations by Al Shabaab along the Somali border. The assistance includes funding for equipment purchases, technical training, and resources crucial for border security and defense operations.

Additionally, the funding will equip Kenya’s military with tactical unmanned aerial vehicles, non-lethal interceptors, jammers, systems to combat improvised explosive devices, electronic warfare capabilities, tactical vehicles, and a mobile medical post. The initiative underscores the EU’s commitment to supporting Kenya as a regional anchor of peace and stability.

This move comes under the framework of the EU-Kenya Strategic Dialogue, reinforcing bilateral cooperation on trade, economic development, and security issues. It aligns with broader EU efforts in the Sahel region and reflects a strategic shift towards linking security cooperation with economic partnerships.

The United States has designated Kenya as a major non-NATO ally, granting privileged access to advanced military equipment, training, and financial support. This complements ongoing US investments in Kenya’s security apparatus, highlighting international recognition of Kenya’s role in regional security dynamics.
