The Ugandan government is actively pursuing an expansion of economic relations with Nigeria, announcing that Abuja will soon become a destination on Uganda Airlines’ flight itineraries.

This declaration was made by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs via its official platform on Thursday.

According to the ministry, the decision came after discussions between Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, Ambassador Nelson Ocheger, and Nigerian Minister for Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, aimed at enhancing trade and commerce between the two nations.

During the meeting, both parties reviewed bilateral agreements across various sectors such as energy, oil and gas, defense and security cooperation, education, among others.

Ambassador Ocheger emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations for the mutual benefit of Uganda and Nigeria. He expressed satisfaction that both countries are committed to enhancing economic, commercial, and political cooperation.

The Ugandan Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated, “Uganda’s High Commissioner to Nigeria, H.E. Amb. @NelsonOcheger, held discussions with Hon. Amb. Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Federal Republic of #Nigeria, @NigeriaMFA in Abuja.

“Their discussions emphasized the imperative of elevating this partnership through increased engagements in business, #trade, #investment, #tourism, and knowledge exchange.

“Ambassador Ocheger reaffirmed @GovUganda’s dedication to fostering closer ties with #Nigeria by facilitating a conducive environment for private sector engagement.

“As part of this commitment, @UGAirlines has initiated direct flights between Entebbe and Lagos, with plans to include Abuja in the near future.”
