Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Denis Obua, the Government Chief Whip, has urged the opposition to cease their political activism and return to their parliamentary duties. He emphasized that the government has provided explanations on human rights violations and fulfilled its obligations. Obua stated that the government adhered to the 30-day period outlined by the presiding officer and encouraged opposition members to use parliamentary mechanisms for their presence.

Lawmakers from the National Resistance Movement (NRM) criticized the opposition’s boycott, viewing it as political activism. They called on voters to hold the opposition accountable for neglecting their parliamentary responsibilities. Godfrey Macho accused opposition MPs of prioritizing the directives of an individual over their constituents’ demands.

Eddie Kwizera questioned why the opposition hadn’t taken their grievances to court, emphasizing that issues of killings and missing persons did not originate from the 11th Parliament. He suggested reporting matters to the police and pursuing legal action if aggrieved.

Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among emphasized that she shouldn’t be held responsible for the opposition impasse and urged boycotting MPs to return rather than seeking resolution behind closed doors.

Minister of State for Sports Peter Ogwang expressed surprise at Mathias Mpuuga’s shift towards activism, urging him to reconsider and stay true to his diplomatic role. Mpuuga maintained that the opposition’s boycott will persist until their demands on human rights violations are addressed satisfactorily. He dismissed the Speaker’s directives as a diversion during a press conference at Parliament.
