EC Plans to Allocate Shs1.38 Trillion for 2026 General Elections

KAMPALA – The Electoral Commission has unveiled its strategic plan for 2022-2023, 2026-2027, and the road map for the 2025-2026 elections, revealing an estimated budget of Shs1.38 trillion for organizing the 2026 general elections.

During the launch event in Kampala, Secretary General Leonard Mulekwah disclosed the projected budget, emphasizing the Commission’s commitment to conducting a transparent and efficient electoral process.

According to the roadmap, several key activities have been scheduled in the run-up to the 2026 elections. The verification of academic papers for presidential, parliamentary, and local government leaders is set to take place between 3rd July 2025 and 1st August 2025. This measure aims to ensure the eligibility and qualifications of candidates vying for various positions.

EC Chairperson, Justice Simon Byabakama, outlined the timeline for other essential activities. The general update of voters’ registers in each parish is scheduled from 3rd to 24th January 2025. Additionally, the nomination of candidates at both national and local government levels will be open from 14th July 2025 to 12th December 2025.

The actual polling for presidential, parliamentary, and local government councils is set to occur between 12th January and 9th February 2026. This crucial period will determine the country’s leadership for the next term.

The Electoral Commission is resolute in implementing these plans to ensure a fair and credible electoral process. With transparency and adherence to the established timelines, the Commission aims to foster public confidence and uphold the democratic principles of Uganda.
