Four killed in Turkana bus vendors collision

A tragic road accident occurred on Saturday morning at Kalemngorok center along the Kitale-Lodwar highway, claiming the lives of four individuals and leaving one person injured.

According to Turkana South Sub-county Police Commander William Adenyo, the incident took place around 7 am when a bus en route to Lodwar lost control and collided with a group of women selling milk by the roadside.

Adenyo reported that the bus overturned, landing on its left side, resulting in the immediate death of four women. Fortunately, none of the passengers on the bus sustained serious injuries.

The injured woman was promptly transported to Lodwar County and Referral Hospital for medical treatment, while the deceased were taken to the hospital’s mortuary.

Police Commander Adenyo stated that investigations have been initiated to determine the cause of the accident.

Describing the grim scene, Kalemngorok Assistant Chief Henry Etabo mentioned that some of the bodies were severely mutilated.

James Kisike, a resident of Kalemngorok, highlighted the growing number of women engaged in selling milk along the road due to the high demand from motorists traveling to Lodwar and Lokichar. He emphasized the urgent need for a designated area away from the road where these vendors can safely conduct their business. Kisike also shed light on the challenging circumstances faced by many of these women, who are often the sole breadwinners for their families, having lost their husbands to banditry attacks.
