  • The Ugandan government, led by Minister Chris Baryomunsi, assures seamless communication for global leaders attending the NAM and G77+China summits in Kampala, with the implementation of advanced Wi-Fi 6 technology and plans for extending improved internet infrastructure nationwide.

The Ugandan government has affirmed its commitment to providing seamless communication for attendees of the 19th Summit of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) and G77+China summits in Kampala. Dr. Chris Baryomunsi, the Minister of ICT and National Guidance, announced the implementation of a reliable and faster internet infrastructure, featuring the latest Wi-Fi 6 technology to ensure enhanced speed and efficiency.

Scheduled from January 15-20 at Speke Resort Munyonyo in Kampala, the NAM Summit aims to gather global leaders to address pressing global issues and promote cooperation among member nations. Subsequently, the Third South Summit, themed “Leaving No One Behind,” will take place from January 20-23, 2024, in Kampala, focusing on enhancing cooperation among the 134 member States of the Group of 77 (G-77).

Minister Baryomunsi underscored that the ICT infrastructure, established by the National Information Technology Authority of Uganda (NITA-U), will provide guests with Wi-Fi 6, the next generation of Wi-Fi technology, offering not only faster speeds but also facilitating easier and quicker communication.

Furthermore, Minister Baryomunsi assured that the internet infrastructure deployed for the summits will remain accessible to the public after the events. Plans are also in progress to extend similar infrastructure to other parts of the country, contributing to the nation’s long-term development.

Addressing concerns about certain communication channels, Baryomunsi noted that Facebook remains restricted at present, urging guests to utilize alternative digital communication channels. He clarified that ongoing discussions between the government and Facebook administration focus on ensuring compliance with Uganda’s regulations and avoiding engagement in partisan politics.

In conclusion, Baryomunsi emphasized that the initiative to enhance internet infrastructure aligns with the government’s broader vision to improve connectivity and digital communication across the country, fostering technological advancements and enabling widespread access to high-quality internet services.
