Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | The government has officially acknowledged its inability to establish the constitutional review commission due to a lack of funds. This revelation was made by the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Affairs, Norbert Mao, in response to Speaker Anita Among’s inquiry about the timeline for setting up the commission to consider constitutional amendments.
A week ago, the government presented partial constitution amendments to parliament, which were subsequently rejected. Parliament insisted on comprehensive constitutional amendments.
Mao informed the parliament that, due to financial constraints, they are now contemplating assigning the responsibilities of the constitutional review commission to the Uganda Law Reform Commission. Following cabinet approval, the new proposals for constitutional amendments will be brought before parliament.
