Summary:

  • The government, led by Deputy Inspector General of Police Gen Katsigazi, opts not to impose a curfew in Kamwenge District after an ADF attack, choosing instead to reinforce security measures, while criticizing Ibanda’s decision to ban night gatherings and urging vigilance during festive events.

Instead of enforcing a curfew in Kamwenge District following a recent attack by suspected Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) rebels, the government, as stated by Deputy Inspector General of Police Maj Gen Geoffrey Katsigazi Tumusiime, is opting to enhance security measures. The response involves an increase in security personnel, the deployment of additional canine units, and the provision of sufficient fuel, vehicles, and logistical support to cover security gaps.

Gen Katsigazi, who visited Kamwenge two days after the incident, conducted a security meeting attended by police and Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) officers. After visiting the scene of the attack, he reassured the public that night gatherings and festive events in Kamwenge District would proceed uninterrupted. However, he emphasized the implementation of stringent security measures.

While addressing journalists, Gen Katsigazi urged residents to remain vigilant during gatherings and prioritize their security. The decision to refrain from imposing a curfew signifies a commitment to maintaining normalcy in the district while reinforcing security for public events.

Gen Katsigazi criticized the district of Ibanda for banning night gatherings due to ADF attacks in Kamwenge, advising leaders to avoid causing panic and allow people to enjoy Christmas. He asserted that directives on gatherings should come directly from the President.

In response to security concerns in Ibanda, the Resident District Commissioner, Mr. Caleb Tukaikiriza, issued a directive temporarily prohibiting overnight prayers and other activities. The decision, stemming from ADF threats in Kamwenge, aims to enhance security measures by restricting gatherings.

Gen Katsigazi emphasized the authorities’ commitment to deterring further rebel attacks in the region by increasing security personnel, deploying canine units, and providing adequate resources. He stated that after addressing resource gaps, security forces should be well-equipped to carry out their duties effectively. Upon his return, he pledged to ensure they receive all necessary support.
