Infamous Kampala city criminal mastermind, Paddy Sserunjogi, widely known as Sobi, was killed amidst a contentious land dispute in Gomba district, marking a dramatic end to a notorious figure whose criminal exploits had once plunged the city into chaos.

Sobi gained notoriety in 2017 as the self-proclaimed leader of Kifeesi, a criminal gang that unleashed a wave of deadly robberies, leaving numerous casualties in its wake. However, three years later, he transitioned to a seemingly quieter existence, establishing a safe haven on Lwamayuba island in Kalangala, as disclosed by a former inmate familiar with the situation.

His shift from a prominent criminal figure to an informant for the then Director General of Internal Security Organisation, Col. Kaka Bagyenda, added a layer of complexity to his checkered past. Despite this shift in allegiance, Sobi’s fate took a dark turn in Kibaale village, Kigumba parish, Maddu Sub-County.

On December 18, 2023, around 12:30 pm, a group of approximately 50 individuals armed with sticks, pangas, and spears descended upon a disputed piece of land owned by Kalisa in Kibaale village. The assailants clashed with another group saying their claim to the same land, resulting in a violent confrontation that claimed the life of Sobi.

The land, acquired by Kalisa for Shs100 million in 2007, saw a tumultuous legal battle unfold. Despite having paid only Shs20 million, a dispute arose over the legitimacy of the transaction, with another group, purportedly the descendants of the late Paul Kibi, led by Deborah Nagadiya and Barton Kiweewa, producing land titles asserting their ownership.

The protracted legal dispute escalated when the second group brought in individuals from Kisenyi Kampala to occupy the contested land, intensifying the tensions. In a premeditated move, Kalisa’s faction allegedly assembled a group of individuals from other areas the night before, gathering at his son’s house to plan an attack on the rival claimants.

Reports indicate that the clash resulted in multiple casualties, though only one body, identified as Sobi, has been recovered, displaying cut wounds on the leg and neck. In response, the Gomba police swiftly intervened, deploying a comprehensive team comprising the Officer in Charge of Stations in Gomba and Maddu, Deputy Officer in Charge of Criminal Investigation Department, SOCCO, and Crime Intelligence, along with uniformed personnel from Gomba, Maddu, and Kigezi police.
