Kampala State Attorney Jailed Over UGX200,000 Bribe

Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | A state attorney from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) has been found guilty of accepting a sh200,000 bribe from two complainants. The conviction took place on October 13, 2023, in the Anti-Corruption Court located in Nakasero, Kampala. Simon Kiwanga was charged with corruption under Sections 2(a) and 26 of the Anti-Corruption Act.

Kiwanga, previously employed as a state prosecutor at the Nabweru Chief Magistrate’s Court in Wakiso district, was accused of directly soliciting sh6 million in gratification from Zam Ndagire and Octavious Kasumba. Additionally, he was charged with accepting sh200,000 from Ndagire on May 15, 2019, at Nabweru Play Ground.

These charges stemmed from their involvement in a criminal case numbered 368 of 2019, which Kiwanga was prosecuting. In her verdict, Magistrate Esther Asiimwe determined that the prosecution had successfully demonstrated Kiwanga’s receipt of the money.

Asiimwe announced that she would deliver the sentence on October 18, 2023, and Kiwanga was remanded to Luzira prison pending the sentencing.
