Kasese District | THE BLACK EXAMINER | On November 22, 2023, a 307 million Ugandan Shilling project to desilt the Kamulikwizi River water channel in Kasese town was officially handed over to Fencon Consulting Engineers Limited. The initiative, funded by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, aims to address flooding issues in the town center caused by the Kamulikwizi River during the rainy season.
The project, covering 1.3 kilometers with an earth channel only, officially commenced on November 23, 2023. Kasese Municipal Mayor Chance Kahindo emphasized that the initiative would mitigate flood challenges in the town but issued a warning to those who have built intentionally in the river channel, urging them to vacate promptly with no compensation for affected persons.
Rev. Eng. Gabriel Fataki of Fencon Consulting Engineers Limited assured that the project would be completed in two weeks, and culverts would be installed on affected roads for improved connectivity. Fataki encouraged community members to collaborate closely with the company for quality work during inspections and project implementation.
Dr. Geoffrey Gabiri, the climate change specialist at the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations, highlighted that the project would consolidate the river into one channel, preventing its spread into the community.
Local Council (LC) chairpersons, including Mr. Samson and Jafali Kigutia of Basecamp Lower, along with community members, expressed appreciation to the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) for the initiative, citing the positive impact on local development in the area.
