Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Kampala businessman Emmanuel Kawesi Lwasa was remanded to Luzira Prison by Mengo Grade One Magistrates Court for his failure to settle a Shs. 18 million debt. Lwasa was loaded onto a prison bus in front of the media after a lengthy court hearing. The debt had accumulated over the past three years. Despite multiple court summons, Lwasa did not respond. A warrant for his arrest had been outstanding for months until he was apprehended by court bailiffs on the Kampala-Mityana Road.
Counsel Martin Muhumuza, representing Lwasa’s creditors, revealed that the businessman had been in hiding for the past three years. Upon his arrest, he had an opportunity to raise the money and clear the debt but failed to do so. Lwasa and his family members spent hours making phone calls in an attempt to gather the funds but were unsuccessful. In the end, the Magistrate ordered his transfer to Luzira Prison while they continued their search for the money.
It’s worth noting that just last year in April, Lwasa was arrested and imprisoned for alleged forgery of signatures on his mining licenses.
