Makerere University Celebrates Legacy of Professor William Senteza Kajubi in 4th Annual Lecture

Kampala, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Makerere University celebrated the legacy of Professor William Senteza Kajubi during its 4th annual lecture, held on November 7, 2023, at the Yusuf Lule Teaching Facility. Professor Kajubi, the first African to receive a Fulbright scholarship in 1952 and a prominent educator who chaired a committee to review Uganda’s Curriculum in 1990, was honored and remembered for his significant contributions to education.

The event, co-hosted by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Barnabas Nawangwe, and the new US Ambassador to Uganda, H.E William W. Popp, aimed to strengthen collaboration between the United States and Makerere University. The theme of the lecture was “Higher Education In The Digital Age: Navigating the Future Through Technological Advancements.”

Ambassador William Popp expressed his honor to be at Makerere University, noting the institution’s distinguished history and bright future. He highlighted the importance of the US mission in Uganda launching the Kajubi-Fulbright Lecture as part of Makerere’s centenary celebrations, stating, “We are pleased to continue the tradition of bringing American and Ugandan experts together to discuss the future of higher education and to honor the first Fulbrighter from Africa and Makerere’s former Vice Chancellor Professor Senteza Kajubi.”

Professor Nawangwe lauded the choice of keynote speakers and highlighted the significance of discussing Uganda’s higher education in the context of technological advancement. He emphasized the enduring impact of Professor Senteza Kajubi, who served as the Vice Chancellor of Makerere University during two separate tenures (1977-1979 and 1990-1993) and played a pivotal role in the drafting of Uganda’s 1995 constitution. Professor Kajubi dedicated his life to academia and community development until his passing on May 1, 2012.
