Mukono, Uganda | THE BLACK EXAMINER | Matthew Kirabo has been sentenced to 30 years in prison by the High Court in Mukono City for the murder of his lover, Desire Mirembe, a medical student at Makerere University. Prosecution, led by Happiness Ayinebyonna, argued that Kirabo extinguished a bright future and advocated for a death sentence.

Justice Henry Kaweesa Isabirye, presiding over the case, considered Kirabo’s time spent on remand and ruled that he serves 29 years, 10 months, and 3 days in prison. Kirabo, who had escaped while on bail in 2021, was convicted in absentia in May 2022 and later arrested by Kenya Interpol. He was extradited to Uganda and remanded on September 15, 2023, awaiting further management of his case.

The murder occurred on July 11, 2015, when Kirabo killed Mirembe after relationship misunderstandings, dumping her body in a sugarcane plantation in Lugazi, Buikwe District. In 2022, Kirabo confessed to the crime, leading police to the scene. The video of his confession was recorded during the investigation.
