The incident occurred after the wedding ceremony of Kyabazinga William Gabula Nadiope and Ms Jovia Mutesi on November 18 at Christ’s Cathedral, Bugembe. The joyous celebration took a sorrowful turn when a driver lost control and collided with a crowd at Nawantumbi Trading Centre along the Kamuli-Jinja Highway, claiming the lives of nine individuals and leaving 23 orphans.
The victims included Kevin Abbo, Lubaale Waiswa, Amisi Mutakubwa, Zalika Mutesi, Timothy Basooma, Emma Gwaalya, Catherine Katono, Godfrey Isabirye, and Stephen Waiswa. The Busoga kingdom initially offered Shs1 million to each family, and later, State House dispatched Shs45 million to be distributed among the affected families.
The Kamuli Resident District Commissioner, Ms Rose Birungi, along with her deputy and the Kamuli LC5 chairperson, personally delivered the monetary assistance to the families, emphasizing that it was a token of condolence from President Museveni. Ms Birungi assured the families that Rebecca Kadaga, Kamuli Woman Member of Parliament and First Deputy Prime Minister, was actively working to provide further support for the survivors.
Expressing gratitude, Mr. Hamza Mudaagi, a widower, appreciated the efforts of the police in apprehending the driver responsible for the accident. He shared his hopes for justice and thanked both the Kyabazinga and President Museveni for their empathetic gestures. Mr. Mudaagi revealed that he had utilized part of the Shs1 million from the Kyabazinga to begin rebuilding a structure where his deceased wife operated a food kiosk and roadside petrol business. He plans to use the additional Shs5 million to complete the construction and stock the business.
