Police and authorities in Rakai District are currently investigating a tragic incident where a atleast 10 individuals lost their lives in a motor accident while en route to a burial in the neighboring Isingiro District.

The driver of a fuso truck, transporting over 35 villagers from Ssanje and Kigolomolo villages in Kyarurangira Sub County, Rakai District, reportedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to overturn multiple times. This resulted in the immediate deaths of 10 passengers, with several others sustaining severe injuries.

The unfortunate crash occurred around 1 pm on Tuesday at Lwabaganda Cell, Dyango Town Council, situated on the border between Rakai and Isingiro Districts. Eyewitness Mr. Paul Nuwamanya described the vehicle as moving at an alarming speed before the driver lost control, leading to the fatal incident.

Mr. Kaggwa Ssekamwa, the Rakai District Chairperson, who was among the initial responders, reported that approximately 20 survivors suffered serious injuries. He urged healthcare providers to offer the injured victims the utmost care to save lives.

Rakai District Police Commander, Mr. Justus Tashobya, confirmed the incident and lamented the loss of lives, particularly as the Easter holidays approached. He urged motorists to avoid reckless driving, citing it as a significant contributor to road accidents.

This tragedy comes shortly after another accident involving a truck carrying around 100 students from St. Paul Kasoro Secondary School in Kyankwanzi District. Similarly, a previous incident on March 11 resulted in the deaths of 10 individuals and numerous injuries after a trailer collided with six vehicles along the Iganga-Tororo highway in Bugiri District.

Rakai District has long awaited the fulfillment of promises to improve road infrastructure, including tarmacking Lumbugu-Lwamaggwa-Lyantonde road and Rakai-Ntantamukye-Isingiro Road, as pledged by President Museveni over two decades ago.
