Approximately 600 pupils in Lira are stranded following the sudden closure of Glory Light Junior School by city authorities due to its illegal operations.

Jasper Abura, the Lira City education officer, accused the school’s proprietor of defrauding parents by falsely claiming that an NGO operating in the Lango Sub-region would sponsor pupils at his school. As a result, parents were led to believe they only needed to pay half of the school fees.

“This false promise led many parents to enroll their children, only to be devastated by the school’s closure on Tuesday, July 16, 2024,” education officials stated.

Abura revealed that the school founder disappeared two weeks ago after allegedly collecting an unspecified amount of money from parents. None of the teaching staff was aware of his dubious dealings, as they had not received their salaries.

Glory Light Junior School operated two campuses: the Ngetta campus in Lira City East Division, which catered to nursery to Primary Three pupils, and the Odokomit campus, located at the former Lira High School in Barapwo ward, Lira City West Division, which catered to Primary Four to Primary Seven pupils.

“The school was operating illegally without the knowledge of the city education department and lacked the necessary operational license,” Abura told the Monitor on Wednesday.

He criticized parents for enrolling their children in schools with uncertain futures and cautioned against falling for scammers promising bursaries.

Efforts to contact the proprietor of Glory Light Junior School were unsuccessful as his known mobile number was unavailable at press time.
