Saturday, July 1, 2023

Police in Nakasongola District are currently investigating the circumstances surrounding a devastating house fire that resulted in the death of a young boy. The incident occurred at the Kibuye landing site in Lwampanga Sub County on Friday night, causing significant damage to property worth millions of shillings.

The victim has been identified as Asuman Lubega, a 7-year-old resident of the area. Preliminary reports suggest that an 8-year-old boy, Hakim Lubega, was responsible for the tragic event. Hakim, who is the son of Rose Namubiru, was attempting to cook food at home when he mistakenly used petrol from their household supplies, which are used in their parents’ business.

According to ASP Sam Twiineamazima, the Savannah Regional police spokesperson, “Our investigations indicate that Hakim Lubega, 8, a son to Rose Namubiru was lighting a charcoal stove to cook food at home when he used petrol fuel which was in the house because their parents deal in the same business. The petrol exploded in the house and the entire house caught fire that burnt the deceased beyond recognition since he was in his deep sleep, and all house properties were also burnt.”

Upon receiving the distress call from the victim’s mother, Namubiru, the police promptly responded and registered a case of arson. They also visited the scene to gather more information. The body of the deceased has been transported to Nakasongola Hospital for postmortem examination.

In a related note, the police’s annual crime report for 2022 reveals that 1,747 cases of arson were reported to the authorities, a slight decrease from the 1,803 cases reported in 2021. However, the numbers remain concerning, as approximately 1,614 cases were reported in 2020. The police continue to prioritize efforts to prevent such tragic incidents and raise awareness about the dangers of mishandling flammable materials.
