Landfill in Kampala, Uganda’s capital, collapsed, resulting in the deaths of eight people, including two children. The Kampala Capital City Authority (KCCA) confirmed the tragedy, which occurred in the Kiteezi district, located in the northern part of the city.
The collapse, triggered by heavy rainfall, buried homes, people, and animals under the massive landslide of garbage. The KCCA, which manages the landfill, reported that 14 individuals were rescued and transported to a hospital, although their conditions remain undisclosed.
The KCCA, in a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter), expressed their sorrow, stating, “On a very sad note, eight people have so far been found dead, six adults and two children.” The authority also assured the public that rescue operations are ongoing and further updates will be provided.
Photos from the scene reveal an excavator sifting through heaps of debris while concerned residents look on. The KCCA explained that the collapse was due to a “structural failure in waste mass” and emphasized that teams from various government agencies are on-site to secure the area and prevent additional incidents.
